IIT Delhi Claims Top Spot in India, Surpasses IIT Bombay in QS Asia University Rankings
The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) has claimed the top position among Indian institutions in the 2025 QS World University Rankings for Asia, advancing due to marked improvements in several indicators, including a major 58-place rise in the “Staff with PhD” category. IIT Bombay, which ranked second nationally, retained high marks globally, ranking 27th in academic reputation and 16th in employer reputation.
Regionally, IIT-Delhi improved from 46th to 44th place, overtaking IIT Bombay, which fell from 40th to 48th position. Other top institutes, including IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, IISc, and IIT Kanpur, also saw modest declines. Notably, IIT Madras dropped from 53rd to 56th, IISc from 58th to 62nd, IIT Kanpur from 63rd to 67th, and IIT Kharagpur from 59th to 60th regionally.

The University of Delhi notably rose from 94th to 81st, achieving the 7th spot nationally. Other notable institutions in the top 10 (India) include IIT Guwahati (104th regionally) and IIT Roorkee (108th). Further, Chandigarh University made a significant jump to 120th, while UPES (148th), VIT (150th), and Shoolini University (168th) all showed upward movement in rankings.
